For the past four or five months I've been using the HI-Q Eco Magic system on a 40 gallon breeder tank, without doing any water changes, and with a lot of fish in the tank. I also have a lot of fast growing plants. There were never any ammonia or nitrite in the tank ( I used Hi-Q's tank starter, which worked well), and the nitrates settled down around 70 -- 80. The fish have all been fine. It's interesting that there are a couple of new products on the market, like the Hi-Q Eco-Magic, that use technology from the commercial food fish aquaculture industry that has been scaled down for the aquarium hobby. These products all work pretty much the same by providing an anoxic or anaerobic environment for bacteria to live that convert nitrates into nitrogen gas.
Most hobbyists don't do water changes, and the Hi-Q system gives your fish continuing excellent water quality even without any water changes.
